Public votes St Dennis Primary School national winner of recycled art competition -

Youngsters at St Dennis Primary School in St Austell, Cornwall, are celebrating after being announced winners of the Big Yellow Pages Art Competition 2009.

Schoolchildren used old Yellow Pages directories to build their artwork, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as part of the Yellow Woods Challenge – a fun and educational environmental campaign for schools based on recycling old Yellow Pages directories.

Naomi Wilkinson, Five TV children’s presenter and Big Yellow Pages Art Competition judge, chose Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as one of six finalists to go head to head in an online public vote.

The enchanting life-size creation made from old Yellow Pages directories went on to receive the most votes during the online voting period from November 25 to December 9. Earlier this month it was announced as the national winner and awarded £1,000 from Yell, publishers of Yellow Pages directories.

Teresa Dick, art co-ordinator at St Dennis Primary School, said: “The £1000 prize is going into our school children’s fund which will be used to fund a trip for the whole school during the summer term.”

Second place went to Upton Cross Primary School in Liskeard, Cornwall, who won £750. The school’s detailed artwork was titled ‘George and Geraldine the Giraffes’.

Afon Taf High School in Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil, received £500 for its third place in the votes, with its full life-size nativity scene cleverly titled ‘Look up Jesus’.

Kimberley Watts-Fitzsimmons, corporate responsibility manager at Yell congratulated St Dennis Primary School, and said: “Entries received in the 2009 Big Yellow Pages Art Competition were fantastic. They once again show the tremendous level of creativity and environmental awareness within our schools. Well done to all the schools that took part.’

Congratulations also go to Blackrod Primary School in Bolton; Belmont Primary School in Stranraer; and Five Islands School in the Isles of Scilly whose artworks made it through to the last six and the public vote.

For every pound awarded to the schools, a matching pound is donated to the Woodland Trust.
