Online public votes sees Upton Cross Primary School in Liskeard, take 2nd place and win £750

Schoolchildren from Upton Cross Primary School showed their creative talent after creating a detailed life-size artwork out of old Yellow Pages directories, which got them 2nd place in the national Big Yellow Pages Art competition 2009, with a £750 cash prize.

The artwork titled ‘George and Geraldine the Giraffes’, was made by the youngsters as part of the Yellow Woods Challenge – a fun and educational environmental campaign for schools based on recycling old Yellow Pages directories.

Naomi Wilkinson, Five TV children’s presenter and Big Yellow Pages Art Competition judge, chose ‘George and Geraldine the Giraffes’ as one of six finalists to go head to head in an online public vote.

The enchanting life-size creation received hundreds of votes and took second place during the online voting period from November 25 to December 9. Winner of the competition was Dennis Primary School, St Austell, Cornwall, for their creation ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, and 3rd place was Afon Taf High School, Merthr Tydfil for their artwork cleverly titled, ‘Look up Jesus’.

Assistant Headteacher, Jackie Wray at Upton Cross Primary School, said: We are astounded and thrilled to win second place as we are a small school with just 80 children and thought we would lose out in the internet vote!   All our school families must have worked very hard to get all their aunts, uncles, grans and grandads voting every day!  Many thanks to all of those who voted for us.  We will put our prize money into our environmental fund to help finance more green initiatives as we strive to be a truly sustainable school.

Kimberley Watts-Fitzsimmons, corporate responsibility manager at Yell congratulated the three top schools, and said: “Entries received in the 2009 Big Yellow Pages Art Competition were fantastic. They once again show
the tremendous level of creativity and environmental awareness within our schools. Well done to all the schools that took part.’

For every pound awarded to the schools, a matching pound is donated to the Woodland Trust.
